There are currently no trains between Dereham and County School. As the first part of the project to restore this line to use, we are aiming to replace all the rotten sleepers between Dereham and Hoe. To begin with, we have marked up 800 for changing at a cost of £25 each. All the work will be carried out by our volunteers. To raise the necessary funds, we are inviting you to sponsor a sleeper.
To date, our line has operated as a long single line, with only one train permitted to run at a time. This limits our service to one train every two hours. In order to double the number of trains that can run, we are building a passing loop at Thuxton. The work includes laying a quarter of a mile of track, building a signal box and signalling system, and lengthening the platforms. Ordinarily such a project would cost in the order of £500,000, but we have secured significant mainline rail industry backing, leaving £50,000 to be raised by public subscription.
Donations to the railway's general funds will mostly be spent on things such as: maintenance of the stations and railway, looking after the locomotives and coaches, and enhancing the facilities that we have available.
If you would like to specify how your donation is to be spent, then we can ensure that it is used only for the purpose of your choice.
