The Mid-Norfolk Railway proudly presents a special event to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the English Electric Type 3 Locomotive, supported by Direct Rail Services and DB Schenker.

The intention is to have a number of visiting locomotives in service of varying types representing the class in their numerous incarnations, from original unrefurbished 'split- box' machines to the later heavy freight workhorses. This will include a number of preserved examples and also those of our industry partners.

Locomotives involved are hoped to be as follows although all are subject to availability, traffic requirements, restoration and the usual caveats (we are also talking to other parties in addition to those listed below):

The weekend of the event will also see the launch of the MNR's passing loop at Thuxton enabling two-train running for the first time with hourly departures timetabled from each end of the line.

Locomotives would be used on an intensive two train service and, subject to suitable funding/commercial agreements, could see the inclusion of a train running on and off the main railway network at Wymondham Junction. Two coaching stock sets will be in use including the MNR's well-renowned blue/grey air-braked Mk2 coaches.

During the day, in an event not seen since Rainhill, a cavalcade of locomotives will pass through Dereham Station allowing a full appreciation and photo opportunities to be had of the locomotives. This will then be followed by a naming of one of the engines.

The Golden Jubilee of probably the most followed modern day locomotives is bound to be a busy one, and this would give the MNR the opportunity to stage the first event of what is likely to be many. It is also important to recognise that the first use of the locomotives was exclusively in East Anglia back in December 1960 and the class has had a major association with the region throughout its history. A further running day will be held in late December to celebrate the very first day of service of the class.

Photographers may wish to have a look at some suggested locations for shots. For further information, e-mail james.steward@mnr.org.uk.
